Many people, after receiving water test results confirming well contamination, ask themselves whether the usually recommended solution - namely a UV lamp for well water - is effective. If so, which lamp should be chosen, what it involves, and what should be known about it. We will take a closer look at each of these issues in today’s article.
How does the device itself work - a UV lamp also simply called a UV water filter?
A UV lamp for well water is a device, usually in the form of a steel tube, that uses UV-C radiation to destroy microorganisms present in water. Ultraviolet rays damage the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, preventing them from reproducing further. It is intended to serve as a barrier between the source of bacteria - for example E. coli in a well or fecal bacteria - and the household drinking water system. The expectations are obvious - it should be effective.
In a germicidal lamp, water flows through a stainless steel chamber containing a UV bulb placed in a quartz sleeve. During the flow, water disinfection takes place – without the use of chemicals, without changing the taste or smell of the water. What is more, once the bacteria are removed, the water gains a crystal-clear taste and transparent appearance.
✅ What problems do UV water filters help with? What type of contamination does a UV lamp for well water fight?
UV lamps are not mechanical filters, they do not stop sand, dust, or mechanical impurities. They are biological filters, meaning germicidal lamps. Well water may contain microorganisms of fecal origin, especially when the well is shallow or located near a septic tank or cultivated fields. The most common threats in well water - against which a UV lamp is used - are:

This is a very important question - because when receiving water test results, we usually learn about various exceeded parameters concerning the permissible levels of iron, manganese, or other elements. Unfortunately, the operation of a germicidal lamp does not address these issues. UV lamps work against purely biological, bacteriological, or viral contamination.
A germicidal lamp for a well therefore does not remove excess:
UV radiation acts only on microorganisms. If the water contains a lot of iron or is turbid, the radiation may be less effective because particles in the water “shield” the bacteria from UV light. However, most groundwater in our country has parameters that allow water disinfection with UV lamps without prior preparation.

In general, if you have your own water source, meaning your own well, it is likely that some kind of water treatment process will be needed sooner or later - if we live in a populated area, in the countryside or in a housing development, that is simply the nature of fecal bacteria.
In the case of water from public waterworks, we are essentially relieved of the duty to care for water quality because according to European water quality regulations this is the responsibility of the state. The water supply administration must ensure that water meets the basic parameters. In the case of water from a private well, however, we must be aware that the water has basically undergone no treatment process at all and only we are responsible for it.

This is a very important issue, because choosing too low a UV dose will not solve the problem. The lamp power must be appropriate and matched to the mass flow rate of water.

A UV lamp that is too small will not provide the proper radiation dose. One that is too large may generate unnecessary costs. The key is to match the device power to the actual water consumption.

Smaller UV filters are also used, but for other applications, for example point disinfection (such as single taps), in horticulture (ponds), in aquariums - or in industry, wherever a specific UV radiation dose is required.
Now a bit of more in-depth knowledge, something for the more curious - namely what UV radiation dose is recommended for well water in order to disinfect it properly. If you are less interested in specific numbers - you can skip to the next paragraph.
The UV radiation dose when selecting lamps for water is measured in J/m². The methodology is as follows:
For our household, by using a Nordic Tec 55W lamp, we aim to achieve around 400 - 450 J/m² and this is an amount sufficient to eliminate 99.3% of biological contamination.
The requirements for a UV lamp for a deep well are not particularly strict and in practice it is basically rare for water to be unsuitable for sterilization. Across Europe there is water that is more or less hard, sometimes with slightly elevated iron or manganese - but in 99% of cases it can be sterilized.
✅ The only real prerequisite is water clarity and a simple mechanical pre-filter. If the water is not transparent, disinfection may indeed fail because the UV rays will be effectively blocked.
Among other recommendations - and here we emphasize that these are rather recommendations than requirements - there is:
The UV lamp for a deep well itself, as an electrical device, should be installed indoors, for example in a boiler room, definitely not outside the building.
A UV lamp for well water should be installed inside the building, in an accessible and safe place.
after the pressure tank or pressure vessel,
after pre-filtration,
in a dry place protected against flooding,
with access to electrical power.
You should also remember to regularly replace the bulb (usually every 12 months) and clean the quartz sleeve.

In many cases yes – but only in terms of biological disinfection. If the problem concerns bacteria only, a UV water filter for well water is a very effective and safe solution.
However, if the water exceeds chemical parameters (iron, manganese, nitrates), additional treatment will be necessary - if justified. It is certainly important to carry out water testing at least from time to time if we have decided to rely on our own well.
