Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an acceptable level of E. Coli bacteria in water. The ideal result that ensures our health is 0 (zero). Why? Because E. Coli bacteria are living organisms. If we repeat the test in a few weeks, the result will likely be different. It could be significantly higher or lower. However, if E. Symptoms of E. Coli poisoning from water include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), and fever. In individuals with weakened immune systems, children, and the elderly, the poisoning can lead to more severe complications, such as dehydration (usually as a reaction to severe vomiting), electrolyte imbalances, and in the worst cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can cause kidney failure. For example, the presence of bacteria in the neighborhood is a good reason to ask neighbors, especially if you live in rural areas or use well water.
✅ What are the methods to remove E. Coli bacteria from water? Are they effective?
Removing E. Coli bacteria from the water source or storage tanks is quite challenging, if not impossible. Common practices include either periodic disinfection of the installation using calcium hypochlorite-based solutions (which is a temporary and cumbersome method) or installing appropriate ultraviolet (UV) filters to prevent E. Coli bacteria from entering the water system. Sometimes both methods are combined: a UV lamp is installed at the water entry point into the house, and periodic disinfection is carried out in case any E. Coli colonies have already established within the building. Generally, for single-family homes, installing a UV lamp is sufficient, while additional disinfection may be necessary for larger buildings (schools, restaurants, hotels).
UV water lamps are usually highly effective, with efficacy rates exceeding 99%, sometimes even reaching 99.7% in eliminating bacteria.
