Linear garage drainage is an element we often forget during the construction or modernization of a property. Later, it turns out this was a mistake - and we should have considered drainage at an earlier stage. A properly chosen linear drain not only prevents the interior of the garage from flooding but also protects the floor and the building structure from moisture. In this article, we will advise on what to pay attention to when choosing drainage and which solutions work best in practice.
First of all - although it may seem obvious to many - it's worth reminding that not every drain can be installed in a garage. Linear garage drainage must be a product dedicated for this purpose.
A garage is a place frequently exposed to water – both from rainfall and melting snow from the car. This is especially true if the garage is in a basement, but not only – water running off tires or the car body can over time lead to:

If we want to choose the right drainage, we need to pay attention to several aspects. There are a number of options available on the market, but they differ in terms of functionality and durability. Generally, it's better to avoid the cheapest options, as this drainage is meant to last for years and be resistant to pressure – it hardly needs mentioning that the primary function of a garage is parking a car, unless we're talking about a simple basement room.

✅ Ultimately, it's best to choose garage drains made of stainless steel. The grade of steel is less important for indoor use; the common S304 steel is sufficient.
When choosing a model of garage drain, it's worth checking its hydraulic efficiency, i.e., how many liters of water it can drain per minute. For home garages, a capacity of 0.5–1 l/s is usually sufficient.
The capacity of such drainage is essentially directly related to the diameter of the outlet pipe. For basic functions, smaller diameters are enough, but if you have a garage in a basement, in a location prone to flooding, then the pipe should have a minimum diameter of DN50. Generally, DN50 is considered the standard, and many professionals believe it is the essential minimum for sewage systems.
However, the drainage available on the market usually meets these functions; it's quite hard to go wrong here.

✅ In short, to make selection easier – you don't need to look at load classes, just remember: The drain must be dedicated for garages; otherwise, it's just an ordinary shower drain. The fact that it's dedicated for use in a garage is essentially the seller's assurance that the product has the appropriate load class. This means you can safely park a car on it.
In home garages, channels with a height of 50–100 mm and a length of 1–5 meters are most commonly used. The choice of length depends on the width of the entrance and the planned direction of water flow – but also on the drainage layout. In larger garages, longer drainage systems can also be used to collect water more effectively.
Linear garage drains are most often constructed in a modular way. This means they consist of a drain grate to which additional water-collecting channels are attached. Any number can be added to achieve the desired length. However, one must consider that when designing longer garage drainage, we will be forced to properly model the floor slopes so that water flows correctly towards the drain. In this case, it's best to rely on the experience of someone who specializes in laying floors.
It's also worth planning for drain cleaning – it's best to choose a model with a removable grate and easy access to the inside of the channel. Even if we imagine keeping the garage perfectly clean, we will eventually realize that the drain also collects leaves and similar debris. These restrict the flow capacity, which is why it's necessary to choose drains that can be cleaned, meaning simply lifting the grate to access the sediment trap collecting the debris.
Correct installation is key to the system's effectiveness. The most important rules are:
