Linear drains, floor drains, and sewer inlets use various solutions to prevent unpleasant odors from the sewer system entering the room - a mechanism known as trapping. The two most common solutions are the wet trap and the dry trap. Although both solutions serve the same function, they work in completely different ways and suit different conditions. They are not interchangeable, since each performs better under specific circumstances. What's the difference between these two types of traps, and which one should you choose?
A trap is a component of the drainage system whose job is to block sewer gases and unpleasant odors from entering the building. It's most commonly installed in linear drains, floor drains, sinks, showers, and other points where water is discharged.
If we're dealing with a drainage system located outdoors, traps usually aren't installed, since odor backflow from the sewer isn't an issue outdoors (the exception being terrace and balcony drains, where people spend time). Indoors it's different - there, it's worth preventing odors from the sewer pipe, since they're not particularly pleasant.
Depending on their construction, traps are divided into wet traps and dry traps.
A wet trap relies on what's known as a water seal. Inside, there's always a small amount of water that forms a natural barrier between the sewer system and the room. It blocks unwanted odors from flowing back.
After water flows through the drain, some of the liquid remains in the trap, effectively blocking sewer gases from passing through.
This solution is simple, effective, and has been used for many years in both residential and industrial construction. It does have some drawbacks, though - a wet trap only works properly as long as there's water in it. If a wet trap is used, for example, in a holiday home (not lived in year-round), keep in mind that the water can evaporate - and once it does, the odor barrier disappears.

Unlike a wet trap, a dry trap doesn't rely on a water seal. Instead, it uses a special mechanical mechanism, usually in the form of a membrane, a flap, or a gravity valve.
As water flows through, the closing element opens, letting the wastewater drain away. Once the flow stops, it automatically returns to its closed position, forming an effective barrier against both odors and insects.
Thanks to this, a dry trap keeps its properties even when no water has flowed through it for a long time. You might think that makes it the better solution compared to a wet trap, which risks drying out. Unfortunately, that's not always the case - the drawback of dry traps is that a certain volume and intensity of water flow is needed to open them (and draining water away is, after all, the primary purpose of any drain or floor inlet). Put simply - if the water flowing in is too little, the dry trap may not open at all, causing the water to pool and evaporate instead of draining away.
For this reason, dry traps may perform poorly in, say, garages, where we're only talking about the water brought in by parking a car. Unless, of course, you're hosing down the garage floor.
The fundamental difference lies in how sewer odors are blocked.
A wet trap uses a layer of water that creates a hydraulic seal. A dry trap works mechanically, without needing to retain water in the drain.
In practice, this means a wet trap can lose its effectiveness once the water evaporates, whereas a dry trap remains effective even during long periods of disuse - though it often requires a certain intensity of water flow to let anything through at all.

If you're installing a garage drain and aren't sure which trap to use, there's also the option of building a wet trap directly into the pipe in a way that prevents it from evaporating. This eliminates its biggest drawback.
All you need to do is build a trap out of PVC elbows so that the evaporating water - now as water vapor - has no direct way out. It then condenses on the pipes and flows back down into the trap. It's enough to position a U-shaped floor trap like this a bit further from the drain grate.

Both wet and dry traps effectively protect rooms from unpleasant sewer odors. Choosing the right solution should depend primarily on how often the drain is used. In places used regularly, a classic wet trap works perfectly well. If the drain is used only occasionally, though, a dry trap is clearly the better choice, since it retains full functionality even after many weeks without any water flow.
