Underfloor heating in the garage is a solution that is increasingly appearing in modern single-family housing. Just a few years ago, the garage was treated as an unheated space or heated only symbolically – many people ask themselves whether heating in the garage is actually necessary. It is a very reasonable question, because heating an additional room means additional cost, and the question arises whether we will realistically need a higher temperature in the garage and whether we will spend time there.
Today, when a garage often serves as a workshop, DIY space or technical room, the question “does underfloor heating in the garage make sense?” becomes fully justified. Not only for this reason – but also due to rising energy costs – we try to take such aspects into account more carefully.
Underfloor heating in the garage is most often installed as water-based underfloor heating – meaning the traditional underfloor system supplied from the same installation as the heating in the house. The heating pipes are embedded in a concrete screed, which distributes heat evenly across the entire surface. Thanks to this, the temperature remains stable, without the effect of a cold floor.
In practice, this means that the garage floor does not cool down as intensely in winter. A warm floor also means fewer problems with moisture or water brought into the garage by a parked car. This is true even though garage linear drains are increasingly used to remove excess water.
Another solution – still within the scope of underfloor systems – is electric heating mats, i.e. electric underfloor heating.
They are sometimes used, for example, in bathrooms. They have their supporters as well as opponents. In general, however, many professionals do not recommend them as an economical solution, as they require significant electricity consumption.

One of the biggest advantages of underfloor heating in the garage is user comfort. A warm floor makes working on a car or doing DIY projects in winter much more pleasant. Additionally, underfloor heating reduces moisture condensation, which is important for protecting the car against corrosion.
Another benefit is even heat distribution. Unlike radiator heating in the garage, there are no local overheating zones near the heat source and cooler areas near the floor.
The cost of heating the garage itself will certainly not be high – per square meter, it will be significantly lower than in living areas of the house. This is because we will most likely not treat the garage as a typical living space and will usually be satisfied with a lower temperature while still maintaining sufficient comfort.
Of course, underfloor heating in the garage is not without drawbacks. First of all, it involves higher installation costs at the construction stage. The system must be properly designed, taking into account vehicle loads as well as adequate thermal insulation.
Another issue is thermal inertia. Underfloor heating heats up more slowly than a radiator. If the garage is used occasionally and quick heating is needed, radiator heating in the garage may respond faster.
This is a frequently asked question – whether installing underfloor heating determines the type of final garage floor. In practice, only to a small extent. As is well known, underfloor heating can be used with ceramic tiles, including more durable, pressure-resistant tiles typically used in garages.
There is also no problem with industrial flooring or with the use of epoxy resin garage flooring.
In summary – almost any type of garage flooring remains available if we decide on underfloor heating.
Insulation is a key aspect. Underfloor heating in the garage makes sense primarily when the garage is well insulated – both from the ground and from the walls and garage door. Without proper insulation, heating costs may be disproportionately high. Therefore, if we want to install it during renovation in an older building, it may be very demanding. In fact, without proper insulation from the ground, underfloor heating in the garage is generally not recommended.
It is also worth considering maintaining a technical temperature in the garage, for example 8–12°C, instead of full thermal comfort as in the house. With a smaller temperature difference between outside and inside, less heat is lost according to the laws of physics – which means we reduce energy waste that we ultimately pay for. The trade-off is reduced comfort when spending time in the garage.
The choice between underfloor heating and radiator heating in the garage depends on how the space is used. If the garage serves as a workshop, studio or needs to remain free from moisture – underfloor heating in the garage will be the better solution.
If, on the other hand, the garage is used only for parking a car and we want to minimize investment costs, a simple radiator may be sufficient.
If we had to give a direct answer, it would be: yes, but not in every case. Underfloor heating in the garage makes sense in new construction, with good insulation and conscious use of the space. It provides comfort, protects against moisture and improves floor durability. If the garage is used solely for parking, one or two simple radiators may be enough.
However, if the garage is uninsulated or used only occasionally, it is worth carefully analyzing costs and alternatives. The right decision should result from the garage’s function, the available budget and the expected standard of use.
