Terrace drainage – what and how should you plan?

Terrace drainage is one of the key elements of a properly constructed outdoor structure. Regardless of whether it is a terrace on the ground, above a garage, or above a heated room – proper water runoff from the terrace determines the durability of the entire investment.

Rainwater, snow, and moisture remaining on the surface can lead to leaks, cracked tiles, delamination of waterproofing, or even damage to the reinforced concrete structure. Therefore, terrace drainage should be planned already at the design stage.

Is terrace drainage really necessary?

It is worth having. Without drainage, using the terrace is far less comfortable in bad weather conditions. The lack of a proper water drainage system from the terrace results in:

• moisture in the layers beneath the tiles, which over time will cause serious problems
• efflorescence and discoloration,
• frost damage,
• degradation of the waterproofing layer

Well-designed terrace drainage ensures quick and effective removal of rainwater from the surface. The correct slope is crucial – usually 1–2%, directed toward the drainage system. Sometimes a separate gutter leading water to the sewage system is sufficient – sometimes a dedicated linear drain may be required, for example a slot-type drain, structurally similar to drainage systems used in garages, provided the aesthetics are appropriate. The key point is effective water removal. However, it cannot be a standard shower drain, which is not a suitable solution for terraces or balconies.

Linear terrace drainage – an effective solution?

Linear terrace drainage is becoming increasingly popular, most often in the form of a slot drain. This solution involves installing a drainage channel with a grate (or a slot inlet) that collects water across the entire width of the surface.

The advantages of linear terrace drainage include:

• high water intake capacity,
• aesthetic appearance,
• possibility of installation along the building wall or at the terrace edge,
• better control over the direction of water flow,
• the ability to connect modular drains to achieve the desired length

In the case of large terrace areas, a linear drainage system is often significantly more effective than a single point drain – especially when there is an option to connect drains into a longer system.

How to properly install terrace drainage?

Effective terrace drainage requires several basic elements:

1. Proper slope

The slope should be formed already in the structural layer or in a sloped mortar layer. Without it, even the best drainage system will not function correctly.

2. Waterproofing

The waterproofing layer must be tight, properly turned up onto walls, and correctly connected to drainage components.

3. Water discharge system

This may include:

• linear drainage,
• a terrace drain outlet,
• a gutter system at the slab edge.

The most important aspect is that water runoff from the terrace is directed to the stormwater sewer system or an infiltration system. Systems that do not discharge water to a drainage system (e.g., directing it only onto the lawn or garden) are not always sufficient.

Terrace water runoff – what should you consider?

When designing terrace water runoff, several factors should be considered:

• the size of the terrace area – the drainage must have adequate capacity
• rainfall intensity in the given region,
• type of surface (tiles, composite decking boards, concrete slabs),
• how the terrace will be used.

For terraces located above heated rooms, system tightness is particularly important. Even small leaks can lead to serious structural issues. Installation mistakes in such cases can be very costly.

Potential mistakes when installing terrace drainage

The most common mistakes include:

• lack of slope, insufficient slope – and sometimes excessive slope, which may effectively remove water but reduces user comfort. The maximum slope is 2 cm per meter, the minimum is 1 cm per meter,
• improper connection of the waterproofing layer with the drainage element,
• installation of the drainage system too high relative to the surface level,
• lack of expansion joints

Poorly executed terrace drainage can cause standing water, which in winter leads to frost damage.

Which solution should you choose?

The choice of system depends on the terrace structure and the investor’s expectations, including aesthetic considerations. Linear terrace drainage works well in modern projects and on large surfaces. Classic point drains may be sufficient for smaller terraces, provided the slopes are properly executed.

The most important thing is that terrace drainage is part of a well-thought-out design, not an addition implemented at the end of the construction process.
