A solar pump group is a key component of a solar collector installation, responsible for the proper circulation of the solar fluid between the collectors and the storage tank. Its quality and correct selection have a direct impact on the efficiency of the entire solar collector system and its durability. It is a component that operates under demanding temperature and pressure conditions.
A pump group for solar collectors is something we purchase rather rarely – it is usually supplied by the installation company. However, if we need to buy one ourselves, what should we pay attention to?
A properly configured solar pump group should be equipped with a safety valve, pressure gauge, thermometers on the supply and return lines, a flow meter and shut-off valves. These components allow monitoring of operating parameters and quick response in case of irregularities. It is also worth paying attention to the presence of an air vent and the possibility of servicing the pump without draining the entire system.
Below is a step-by-step list of important – or even essential – equipment of a solar pump group:
Solar installations operate at very high temperatures, especially in summer – this is obvious. Therefore, a solar pump group should be made of materials resistant to temperatures exceeding even 120–130°C. The quality of seals, thermal insulation and resistance of components to solar glycol (which can be aggressive, especially at higher concentrations) are essential. Cheaper solutions may degrade more quickly under such conditions.
Although price matters, a pump group for solar collectors is not a component where excessive savings are advisable – but at the same time, an inflated price does not necessarily guarantee proportional benefits. In general, solar pump groups are significantly more expensive than traditional pump groups due to additional equipment and the need to withstand more demanding operating conditions.
The cost of such small but important components as a pump group or a solar heat exchanger is still relatively low compared to the entire solar installation, while they play a key role in its safety and efficiency. A properly selected and solidly manufactured pump group will help avoid operational problems, reduce energy losses and ensure stable system operation for many years.
