A plate heat exchanger does not mix the media and separates them mechanically as well – which allows a closed underfloor heating system to be connected to an open boiler system (for example, an old-type boiler operating in an open system, a coal boiler, a wood boiler or a fireplace).

A low loss header for underfloor heating, on the other hand, is used when the entire system operates in a closed system, because it separates the circuits in terms of pressure – but inside the header the media still mix.
