What is the difference between a solar pump station and standard pump groups?

In heating installations, especially those based on modern energy sources, a key element is the pump group. These are sets of components assembled in one place, within one ready-made module, most often in thermal insulation - the heart of which is the circulation pump.

They are responsible for the proper circulation of the medium in the system and ensure the efficient operation of the entire installation. In practice, we can find both standard pump groups, most commonly used in central heating systems, and solar groups, which are designed for solar installations - and therefore can work with solar collectors. Although they look similar at first glance, they differ in construction and range of functions. A solar group must have some more specialized components that make it suitable for operating solar collectors.

Solar Group vs. Standard Pump Station – Different Applications

• Standard pump groups are most often used in central heating installations, where the working medium is water or a water solution with a small addition of anti-corrosive agent. As we know, these also vary; some are equipped with a mixing valve, while others do not offer mixing functionality - but both types find application and are complementary in classic heating systems.

• Solar groups are designed for solar installations, where the medium is solar glycol resistant to freezing (so that the installation, partially located on the roof, is not damaged in winter). This allows the solar collector installation to operate safely all year round, even in winter.

So now we know that these groups work with a different medium, as we usually don't deal with water in solar collectors. This is important - because when selecting a circulation pump for a solar group - it must be a pump adapted for glycol (not all are).

Solar Pump Group – Greater Resistance to High Temperatures and Pressure

One of the most important differences is the operating temperature range:

• A standard pump group handles installations where the temperature is usually in the range from a dozen to several dozen degrees Celsius. Modern heat sources and new systems actually prefer low temperatures. New homes with only underfloor heating are heated with a medium rarely exceeding 35°C, and modern radiators rarely need more than 45°.
• A solar pump group, however, must withstand extreme conditions – up to 180–220°C in stagnation situations, when solar collectors heat up without heat extraction. This requires the use of materials and seals with increased thermal resistance. Temperature also brings pressure increases.

Solar Group – Specialized Equipment Elements - Which Ones?

Differences also concern construction and additional accessories:

• The solar group has a solar air vent adapted to work at high temperatures. It is absolutely necessary because air can enter the system, usually when refilling and filling the system.
• Air separator - a very important accessory, correlated with the air vent, which we have already written about on our blog.
• It is equipped with a safety valve with higher parameters, protecting the installation from excessive pressure increase. In fact, most often the group is equipped with something like a mini safety group, in which the safety valve itself plays a key role.
• It most often also includes a flow meter - or otherwise a solar rotameter, which facilitates the regulation of the solar installation. Without it, it will not be possible to correctly adjust the flows and volume of poured glycol (at the very least, it will be very difficult).
• The thermal insulation of the solar group is made of materials resistant to temperatures much higher than in standard pump groups - at least it should be.

Using a Standard Pump Group for Solar Collectors

Using an incorrect pump group for solar collectors can lead to serious problems in the operation of the installation:

• using a standard pump group in a solar installation results in rapid wear of components, leaks, glycol loss - sometimes even loss of warranty on other components, including the solar collectors themselves.

However, choosing a solar group in a standard central heating installation would be financially unprofitable, as its construction and parameters are intended for different operating conditions - it can sometimes cost twice as much as a standard pump group.

Summary – Solar or Standard Pump Group?

The basic difference is that a solar group is a specialized device, adapted to work with glycol, high temperatures, and large pressure fluctuations, while a standard pump group handles typical heating installations with water.

Therefore - when selecting a pump group, one should always be guided by the type of installation and operating parameters to ensure the safety, efficiency, and longevity of the system. A solar pump group is not better than a traditional one - it simply serves a different, more specialized purpose.
