BSP thread – what type of thread is it? What exactly does it mean?

BSP thread is one of the most commonly encountered designations in hydraulic and pneumatic installations, as well as in many technical devices – what exactly is a BSP thread?

It appears on valves, heat exchangers, water filters, dirt separaotrs, pumps, as well as various types of fittings and installation components. For people who do not deal with installations on a daily basis, however, the abbreviation BSP may seem rather mysterious. It is therefore worth explaining what exactly a BSP thread is, where it comes from and how to recognize it in practice.

It is the most popular type of thread in Europe and if technical descriptions of hydraulic devices, commercial offers or informational brochures contain information about the thread size – it most likely refers to the BSP thread, unless another thread standard is specified.

BSP thread – what does the abbreviation mean?

The abbreviation BSP comes from the English term British Standard Pipe. It is a pipe thread standard developed in Great Britain, already during the Industrial Revolution, which over time became one of the most commonly used thread standards in water and heating installations in Europe. Since in the 18th and 19th centuries Great Britain was the most technologically advanced country, often called the workshop of the world, its solutions and standards – including the BSP thread standard – were adopted in many other countries.

BSP threads are mainly used in installations:

• water systems
• heating systems
• hydraulic systems
• pneumatic systems
• gas systems

In practice, this means that if we see the BSP marking on a device, we can be sure that the thread complies with the British pipe thread standard. Sometimes it is even omitted, because the use of BSP threads is almost obvious. The designation is usually given only when a less typical thread standard is used (e.g. NPT).

But this is not only about a British standard. Because BSP is the basic thread standard in Europe, we can be sure that a device with 1-inch connections purchased, for example, in Poland, Germany or Ireland will be compatible with 1" threads used in another European country and will match in terms of size. This would not be possible without the use of a unified thread standard. That standard is the BSP thread.

BSP thread in hydraulic and heating installations

BSP threads are very popular in technical installations because they provide good sealing of connections and high versatility of use. They can be found, among others, in elements such as:

• heat exchangers
• circulation pumps
• installation valves
• water filters
• heating manifolds
• various types of fittings and nipples
• pump groups
• hydraulic separators – and of course the list could go on almost endlessly

✅ In many devices, BSP threads are most commonly used in sizes such as 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4" or 1 1/2". These sizes refer to historical pipe diameters and do not directly correspond to the actual diameter of the thread. This should be remembered, because very often non-specialists assume that a 1-inch thread corresponds exactly to the mathematical inch size, which is not the case, because it refers to the pipe diameter – while the actual thread diameter is slightly different.

BSPP and BSPT – two basic types of BSP threads

However, the BSP thread standard is not as simple as it might seem.

Within the BSP standard two basic types of threads are distinguished:

• BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) – a cylindrical thread, much more common.
• BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) – a tapered thread.

☑️✅ What is the difference between BSPP and BSPT threads?

The BSPP thread has a constant diameter along its entire length. In this type of connection, tightness is usually achieved by additional elements such as flat gaskets, O-rings or sealing washers.

On the other hand, the BSPT thread is a tapered thread that narrows toward the end of the thread. Thanks to this, after tightening the elements, a very tight connection is obtained, often without the need for additional seals. The difference therefore lies not only in the thread geometry – but also in the sealing method.

If markings are missing or it is not entirely clear which variant of the BSP thread is involved – it will usually be BSPP, although of course whenever possible it is best to ask the seller or manufacturer.

How to recognize a BSP thread in practice

Recognizing a BSP thread in practice can be relatively simple, especially if we have access to manufacturer markings or technical documentation. The most common designations are:

• G – for BSPP thread (e.g. G1/2, G3/4, G1)
• R – for BSPT thread (e.g. R1/2, R3/4)

In many cases, manufacturers simply use the thread size designation in inches, e.g. 1/2", 3/4", 1", assuming that the standard is BSP. However, in technical drawings the designations G1/2, G3/4" or G1 are most commonly used – which clearly indicate BSPP threads. Slightly less often one encounters R1/2, R3/4" or R1.

If we are not sure about the type of thread, it is possible to check:

• the external diameter of the thread
• thread pitch
• the number of threads per inch

For this purpose, special thread gauges are often used.

BSP threads vs. the NPT standard – what are the differences

A common question concerns the difference between BSP threads and the popular US NPT thread (National Pipe Thread).

The most important differences between them are:

• thread angle – BSP has a 55° angle, while NPT has 60°

• thread profile – the shape of the thread peaks and valleys is different

• compatibility – BSP and NPT threads are not fully compatible with each other ❌

In practice, this means that components with BSP threads should not be connected with components with NPT threads, as this may lead to leaks or thread damage. In practice, this is a separate standard, different both technically and geographically in terms of use.

✅ Interesting fact – in the USA, as a country of Anglo-Saxon culture, not only the NPT thread is used. The post-British BSP standard is also used, although not on such a large scale as in Europe. In the USA and Canada the domestic American NPT thread dominates.

Summary – in Europe the hydraulic standard is BSP

In European hydraulics, BSP threads are the standard for pipe connections – not NPT or SAE, which are rare or used in somewhat different applications than classic hydraulics or heating technology.

Therefore, manufacturers of installation fittings (such as valves, filters, exchangers, pump stations, boiler manifolds, fittings) design their connections precisely in this system. Thanks to this, we can be sure that a fitting purchased in a store will fit our home heating installation. The standardization of threads around the BSP system took place a very long time ago (19th century) and in practice – in the field of hydraulics – unified Europe long before the idea of European political integration was created.
