# Mixing Valve Actuator and Its Role in the Heating System and in Delivering the Heating Medium
The mixing valve actuator is essentially a key component in modern heating systems, responsible for precise control of the heating medium's temperature—if we're talking about truly modern, maintenance-free heating systems, since, of course, it's possible to operate without an actuator by manually controlling the mixing valves. The actuator mounted on the mixing valve—most commonly a 3-way or 4-way valve—enables smooth adjustment of the proportion of hot and cold water before it is directed to heat emitters, such as radiators or underfloor heating.
The main role of the actuator is to automatically set the valve position based on signals from a weather compensator or room thermostat. This allows the temperature of the heating medium (i.e., the hot medium supplying radiators or underfloor heating) to be dynamically adjusted to current conditions—both external (weather-related) and internal—which enhances user comfort and the energy efficiency of the entire system. This eliminates the need for manual adjustments.
Of course, the actuator can be used for standalone mixing valves as well as for mixing pump groups—those equipped with a 3-way valve. In pump groups, the actuator serves essentially the same function.
Definitely worth it—it's not just about making the heating system maintenance-free but also about the savings generated by precise temperature management of the heating system. This avoids overheating the system, and although few people think about it daily, overheating homes and heating systems is simply throwing money away.
Using actuators in installations with mixing valves not only improves thermal energy management but also protects system components from overheating, which is particularly important for underfloor heating. In practice, the actuator ensures smooth, quiet, and reliable control, making it an indispensable component of any modern heating system.
First and foremost, the primary—and for many, the most important—advantage of using valves and pump groups with actuators is the aforementioned savings aspect. Considering that an actuator costs between 80 and 130 €, the precise temperature management of the heating system makes it a quickly repayable investment, possibly within just one or two heating seasons. However, this is not the only advantage.
Having mixing valves or pump-mixing groups without an actuator means manual control. This requires going to the boiler room and, through trial and error, adjusting the valve to the right position. Needless to say, as conditions change—for example, due to weather—another trip to the boiler room is needed to readjust the valve. In practice, this often leads to neglect, resulting in a home that is sometimes overheated (e.g., at the start of the heating season when temperatures haven’t dropped significantly) or underheated, consuming more energy than necessary—which translates to higher bills.
In contrast, automatic opening and closing of the mixer eliminates the need for manual intervention entirely.
Because the actuator is coordinated with a room thermostat, it automatically closes or opens the valve when needed. This allows, for example, setting an exact desired temperature in the home without exceeding the preferred level. As a result, we live more comfortably and healthily—being able to set the thermostat to, say, 21°C (the recommended temperature) or 22°C, or any other preferred level.
It's worth noting that mixing valve actuators, synchronized with room thermostats, can even be programmed for different day and night temperatures. This provides greater comfort, allowing for cooler sleep temperatures. Essentially, we only decide the temperature—the actuator handles the rest by opening or closing the valve and regulating the heating medium's temperature.
Cold return is a highly dangerous situation for modern boilers, where the temperature of the central heating water returning to the boiler is extremely low. In the past, when old cast-iron coal boilers were used, this wasn’t an issue. But with newer boilers—such as gas, pellet, or eco-pea coal boilers—cold return is destructive, and most manufacturers even tie warranty conditions to the use of devices preventing cold return. It can be prevented in several ways, such as by installing a hydraulic separator, a plate heat exchanger—or a 3-way valve with an actuator or a 4-way valve with an actuator.
