For everyone, however, it is important that these devices are characterized by high energy efficiency, which translates into savings in operation.

Why is propane (R290) an eco-friendly refrigerant?

Propane, also known as R290, is a natural hydrocarbon that stands out for its zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential. The use of propane in heat pumps not only reduces the emission of harmful gases but also supports the development of technologies aligned with sustainable development principles.

GWP (Global Warming Potential) of R290 – what does a low GWP mean?

Thanks to the use of the natural refrigerant R290, these devices offer excellent energy efficiency, which translates into lower operational costs. Combined with support programs such as "Clean Air", the purchase of R290 heat pumps becomes a good alternative.

Moreover, having such a heating system can increase the value of a single-family home (as a property), highlighting its modernity and ecological character. In an era of growing ecological awareness, R290 heat pumps can become a significant asset when selling a home. However, it is worth noting that heat pump sellers will always try to convince you to buy.

☑️✅ It is not true that every home is suitable for heat pump installation. Installing a heat pump in an old house is not always justified, unless after thermal modernization (but sometimes thermal modernization involves such high costs that it calls into question the entire investment in a heat pump). We are not heat pump sellers – and we write honestly about these matters, which distributors of these devices usually won't tell you.

Selection of heat exchangers for R290 heat pumps

The heat exchanger is, of course, a key component, also in R290 heat pumps, but we must know that there can be two types of heat exchangers here. If we are talking about monobloc heat pumps, installers often decide to fill the pump circuit with glycol to protect it from potential freezing. In this case, the two heat pumps must be separated by a heat exchanger for the heat pump.

The selection of such heat exchangers is based on the media being water and glycol. The heat exchanger does not work directly with R290. Such heat exchangers usually require between 1.5 to 3m² of plate surface per 10 kW of heat pump (a calculation that works for NORDIC TEC heat exchangers, not necessarily for other manufacturers). These are quite large surfaces.

Separation of R290 Split heat pumps

In some situations, especially when installing a heat pump in a house with an old, open, potentially contaminated system, we separate the heat pump from the system to protect it. We won't go into whether a heat pump should even be installed under such conditions – in practice, it often is. In such cases, we also separate the heat pump using a plate heat exchanger, which can have a smaller surface area than a glycol heat exchanger, as in the case of a monobloc. Why? Water exchanges heat much more easily than glycol. Therefore, the surface areas can be about 10-15% smaller.

Heat exchanger for R290 – gas-to-water

If it comes to a situation where we are looking for a heat exchanger that could work as a condenser for an R290 heat pump – it must be noted that it cannot be just any heat exchanger. Traditional heat exchangers have a pressure resistance of up to 20-30 bar (too low), and they are not particularly resistant to pressure spikes, which are quite common in this application. An R290 heat exchanger must have a working pressure of at least 45 bar and certification for use with gas. A good choice here are heat exchangers from the Ba-26-F series. They are also suitable for DIY heat pumps made from air conditioners, which, by the way, has become a regular trend in Europe.

Comparison of R290 with other refrigerants

Choosing the right refrigerant is key to success if we care about efficiency and ecology in heating systems. Compared to other substances, such as R32, R290 stands out – and for good reason. Also known as propane, it is characterized by a much lower global warming potential, making it more environmentally friendly. In times when caring for the environment is becoming a priority for more and more people, choosing a refrigerant that minimizes the negative impact on the planet is crucial.
