The R448A refrigerant is one of the more modern solutions – one of the popular refrigerants used in refrigeration technology, although certainly not the first on the market – because in fact it was created as a replacement for much older, more emissive gases. In recent years, it has gained some popularity, especially in the commercial refrigeration sector, where both operating parameters and environmental impact are important – although it does not appear as often as the classic R410A, R407C or the recently trendy R32. In this article, we explain what exactly R448A is, what properties it has, and when it is worth using.
R448A is not a single-component gas – it is a so-called zeotropic refrigerant, meaning a mixture of several refrigerants belonging to the HFO/HFC group. It was developed as a more environmentally friendly alternative to refrigerants such as R404A or R507. Its chemical composition allows good thermodynamic properties while simultaneously reducing the impact on global warming.
As it is a zeotropic refrigerant – during the phase change process, the so-called temperature glide occurs. In practice, this requires an appropriate approach during the design and servicing of installations.
The R448A refrigerant appeared on the market relatively recently – it was developed and commercially introduced only around 2014–2015.
Its development was led by the company Honeywell (under the trade name Solstice® N40), in response to growing environmental requirements and the need to replace refrigerants such as R404A with a high GWP coefficient.
In practice, this means that R448A is one of the “next-generation” refrigerants designed with regulations such as F-gas restrictions in the European Union already in mind.
The main reason for the growing popularity of R448A is its lower GWP coefficient (Global Warming Potential) compared to older refrigerants – and as we know, this has been strongly promoted by international agreements and later by legislation in individual countries since the times of the so-called Montreal Protocol, in which many countries committed themselves to using more environmentally friendly replacements. This is, of course, an approach also promoted by the European Union.
For example, the GWP of R448A is more than 60% lower than that of R404A.
In the era of tightening environmental regulations (e.g. F-gas regulations in the European Union), choosing a refrigerant with a lower climate impact is becoming a necessity. R448A fits these requirements, offering a compromise between efficiency and ecology – while also being quite efficient. Therefore, it can be said that this is a natural development of the industry – replacing older refrigerants with newer ones, although pro-environmental regulations somewhat shape the ecological direction of change.
R448A is characterized by very good thermodynamic properties, thanks to which it can be used in a wide temperature range – from medium-temperature refrigeration to low-temperature refrigeration.

It is especially popular as a retrofit refrigerant, meaning it is used to modernize existing systems originally designed for R404A. As can be seen, it is not necessarily used in small heat pumps or refrigerators, where for years refrigerants such as R134A dominated, and recently increasingly often R32.

However, these are not disqualifying disadvantages, but rather aspects that should be taken into account during the design and operation of the system. In fact, every refrigerant has its own disadvantages; the question is whether we always call them disadvantages or rather a specific characteristic of a given gas.
