This opened the door to establishing new standards for heat pump and air conditioning gases - and it is estimated that by the mid-90s, R134a had essentially conquered the market - becoming the most popular and recognized as the modern standard.
Some industry professionals believe that R134a, popular for decades, is being phased out due to "climate hysteria." However, compared to R32, it is objectively less eco-friendly, not just in terms of its impact on global warming but also its decomposition process. It seems that, based on research, its environmental impact is justified, but there are other reasons as well.
However - as is often the case, not everything is as good as it seems, and R134a has its drawbacks. The biggest one is the aforementioned GWP (Global Warming Potential) - for this refrigerant, it is as high as 1430. This means its contribution to global warming is significant – though still less than older substances like CFC or HCFC.
In response to climate trends, many countries, including those in the European Union, have introduced regulations limiting its use. Increasingly, more eco-friendly alternatives with a lower climate impact are being promoted.
Despite these challenges, R134a still maintains a strong position in the refrigeration market. Why is this the case? Because it is reliable, efficient, and still readily available. The future of this refrigerant, however, remains uncertain. Everything depends on:

By the end of 2024, especially after Trump's victory (who is known to be less positively inclined toward climate defense at all costs), something shifted in Europe as well. Although the European Commission is among the proponents of extreme climate solutions (see the Green Deal), there have been open suggestions that the most stringent and unrealistic assumptions will be revised and softened. Will this slow down the phase-out of R134a? We believe so, or at least there are many indications pointing in that direction.

(It's worth noting that ecological and climate motivations didn't start 10 or 15 years ago but were already driving the direction of refrigerant development in the 1970s). In the face of growing challenges related to global warming, regulations concerning R134a are becoming crucial. This fluorinated greenhouse gas - unfortunately, is already subject to strict regulations in the European Union. EU Regulation 517/2014 was developed to limit both its use and emissions. These actions, of course, align with the EU's climate policy - and their direction is easy to predict.
Fluorinated greenhouse gases, known as F-gases, likely play some role in the process of global warming (though some believe it to be... a very significant one). Among them, R134a stands out, used in systems like air conditioning and heat pumps. The emission of these gases is strictly controlled by EU regulations. This is a key element in the fight against global warming. These regulations aim to protect the planet but also force the refrigeration industry to seek more eco-friendly solutions. The downside of these solutions is the price of heat pumps, which certainly doesn't benefit their cost, at least in the short term.
EU Regulation 517/2014 is one of the most important legal acts concerning the reduction of emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases, such as R134a. Its main goal is to limit the use and emissions of these substances, directly contributing to environmental protection. These regulations require companies to implement more eco-friendly alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Firms must adapt to new standards, which fosters innovation and introduces more environmentally friendly technologies. Of course, the regulation had to be adopted by the national parliaments of EU member states as well.
The obligation to hold an F-GAS certificate applies to companies and individuals involved in the purchase, maintenance, and servicing of R134a. According to EU regulations, this certificate confirms that those working with this refrigerant have the appropriate qualifications and are aware of its environmental impact. This certification not only ensures compliance with regulations but also promotes responsible and safe use of R134a. This makes it possible to effectively limit the emission of harmful gases - but also ensures that service technicians have undergone some training on handling F-gases. It's a step toward more conscious market management - let's face it, such regulations would have been introduced sooner or later.
Although R134a has weaker thermodynamic properties than, for example, R32, meaning that heat pump systems with R32 will be more efficient in terms of power consumption (the so-called COP in heat pumps) - it was unbeatable in one area. Gases of this type are high-pressure media, which is a certain problem, for example, when selecting a heat exchanger for a specific refrigerant.
It turns out that all alternatives fall short in this regard compared to R134a, which did not require such high pressures at similar temperatures - e.g., compared to R32, R410a, or R407c. The following graph illustrates this:

In the era of ecological awareness ... driven by legal solutions ... the search for substitutes for R134a becomes crucial, as it may one day become unavailable. The market is seeing increasingly innovative solutions characterized by lower global warming potential (GWP). Below, we present the most important alternatives gaining recognition in this dynamically developing field.
One of the most promising substitutes for R134a is R1234yf. This modern refrigerant stands out for its exceptionally low GWP. Its thermodynamic properties are almost identical to R134a, meaning that switching to this substitute does not require costly modifications to existing heat pump systems. Thanks to this compatibility, R1234yf is gaining popularity, especially in air conditioning systems for new car models, where ecological considerations play a key role.
Difluoromethane, or R32, is being touted as the successor to R134a. Of course, it is more eco-friendly, which has earned it the sympathy of EU legislators. However, it's also worth noting that there are other, more realistic technical reasons for its use - the thermodynamic properties of R32 are even better than R134a. This means that heat pumps operating with R32 can be more efficient with lower power consumption.
In addition to R1234yf, other refrigerants such as R410a, R407c, and R448a are still available on the market. Each of them offers some benefits and finds application in different areas:
