Underfloor heating is a heating system in which heat is released evenly through the floor surface – we all know that, but is using it in the kitchen (instead of radiators) a good idea? In practice, this means no traditional radiators and a more comfortable temperature distribution in the room. In the kitchen, where we often walk barefoot or in light footwear, such a solution significantly improves everyday comfort. We generally assess the idea positively, both in terms of efficiency and aesthetics. More aspects below.
The kitchen is one of the most frequently used rooms in the home. Underfloor heating in the kitchen provides pleasant warmth underfoot, which is especially noticeable on colder days. In addition, it eliminates cold zones near the floor, which are typical of traditional heating systems.
For those who worry that underfloor heating may be less effective than radiators – nothing could be further from the truth. Properly installed underfloor heating can work very well in the kitchen, in the bathroom or even in the garage. It is just as effective as radiators and may even be more economical in use, especially if the main heat source is a device that operates preferentially at low temperatures (e.g. a heat pump or a condensing boiler).
The most important advantage is thermal comfort and even temperature distribution – unlike radiators, which emit the most heat in their immediate vicinity. Underfloor heating in the kitchen also allows for better use of space – no radiators means more room for furniture and appliances. In addition, this system operates at lower temperatures, which may translate into energy savings for the entire system.
So does underfloor heating in the kitchen have any disadvantages?
Despite many advantages and an overall positive assessment of this solution, underfloor heating in the kitchen also has its limitations. Installation is more expensive than traditional radiators, especially when modernising an already existing building. In addition, care should be taken when choosing flooring materials – not all of them conduct heat well.
In the kitchen, ceramic tiles or stone work best, although underfloor heating can also work with vinyl panels or with a wooden floor (properly selected). However, it should be remembered that the choice of flooring should also be functional in relation to the main function of the kitchen.
A certain disadvantage of underfloor heating – not only in the kitchen, but in general as a heating system – is its inertia, i.e. the time needed to heat up the system. If the building is heated intermittently, e.g. in the case of a temporarily occupied building, the underfloor heating system needs several hours to heat the floor – which translates into a much longer time needed to heat the room (compared to radiators).
Similarly, if we decide that it is warm enough and want to turn the heating off. In the case of radiators, we will feel that they are cooler after just a few or several minutes. In the case of underfloor heating, this may take many hours.
However, it is worth remembering that this disadvantage is not felt in permanently occupied homes that are heated regularly. It is noticeable only in buildings heated temporarily, where we stay irregularly.
We distinguish two main types: water-based and electric. Water-based underfloor heating is more economical in the long term and works well in single-family houses. Electric heating, on the other hand, is easier to install and is often used in apartments or during renovations of individual rooms, such as the kitchen.
For the kitchen – and generally for the home – most professionals, however, consider water-based underfloor heating more beneficial. Moreover, this does not mean that it cannot be powered by an ecological electric heat source – such as a heat pump or an electric boiler separated by a heat exchanger.
The installation of underfloor heating in the kitchen requires proper preparation of the substrate and insulation. It is also important to plan the arrangement of furniture – it is not recommended to lay the installation under fixed kitchen units or permanent furniture. The use of appropriate temperature control is also crucial, as it allows optimal conditions to be maintained in the room.
The installation cost depends on the selected system and the kitchen area. Water-based underfloor heating involves a higher initial expense, but lower operating costs. Electric heating is cheaper to install, but may generate higher energy bills. Therefore, it is worth carefully analyzing your needs and possibilities.
The final decision depends on many factors, such as the budget, building type and user preferences. Underfloor heating in the kitchen is a modern, comfortable and aesthetic solution that proves very beneficial in many cases. It works particularly well in new projects, where it can be included already at the design stage.
