However, central heating was not used in homes, which meant that a district heating system could not yet exist.

It was there that the first heating systems were developed, with one of the most groundbreaking inventions being the hypocaustum. This innovative system allowed hot air to flow under floors and through channels in walls, enabling the even distribution of heat in homes and baths. The hypocaust allowed for a fundamental concept – the possibility of heating many homes equipped with a hypocaust from a single heat source, such as a boiler or a fire. It was one of the first central heating systems.

The hypocaust or latin hypocaustum, the ancient underfloor heating system, is a true masterpiece of engineering from those times. In Roman homes and baths, hot air flowed under the floor and through channels in the walls, providing even heat.
