In this article, we look at questions that come up often about using UV sterilizers, commonly known as UV lamps for water. Very often, when buying a UV lamp, people don't realise how it works or how it should work, and questions like these come up. We'll answer them in this article:
It's worth reading to the end - the information is universal and applies to any UV lamp with a traditional mercury emitter, regardless of brand or manufacturer.
A standard UV lamp for water treatment is designed for continuous, i.e. 24/7, operation. This means that once switched on, it should stay on around the clock, regardless of whether water happens to be flowing through the installation at that particular moment. The UV emitter reaches full effectiveness only once its operation has stabilised, which is why frequent switching on and off reduces disinfection effectiveness.
During a temporary (or longer) period without water flow, the lamp keeps emitting UV radiation, staying ready for immediate disinfection the moment a tap is opened or the system starts up again. As a result, every portion of the water that flows through is treated with radiation from the very first second. A lamp that's switched on also acts as a barrier that's impossible to get through - for bacteria and fungi alike.
A lamp that's switched on forms a barrier in the water system that bacteria can't get through. Bacteria such as E. coli or Enterococci can easily travel through the water into further parts of the system, where they establish new colonies. So switching the lamp off overnight means that switching it back on afterwards may not restore full effectiveness straight away. Switching off this ultraviolet barrier therefore makes little sense from the point of view of water disinfection - particularly if you're using a UV lamp to sterilise water from a well or your own private supply.
Switching the lamp off does make sense, but only for longer trips - at least 1-2 days - since as a general rule electrical devices should be switched off in that case. That's a higher, and essentially different, safety consideration.
Exceptions exist only for specialised industrial systems fitted with automatic emitter power-control circuits, or installations specifically designed for intermittent operation. For the vast majority of domestic and commercial UV sterilizers, however, the manufacturer recommends uninterrupted operation, 24 hours a day.
Every time a UV emitter is switched on, it goes through a so-called start-up, during which the electrodes are placed under the greatest load. This is exactly the moment that causes the most wear to the components responsible for producing ultraviolet radiation. For this reason, frequently switching the lamp off and back on can significantly shorten its lifespan.
UV emitters - or, more simply, bulbs - used in water sterilizers are designed with continuous operation in mind. Their rated lifetime - typically around 8,000-10,000 hours, and even longer for some models - assumes the unit stays switched on for practically the whole of its service life. Repeated on-off cycles wear the electrodes out faster and can cause the UV output to drop off sooner than it should.
For this reason, switching the sterilizer off every time water stops being drawn is not recommended. The potential energy savings are small, while the risk of shortening the emitter's lifespan and reducing disinfection effectiveness is real. In practice, it's far more worthwhile to leave the UV lamp running continuously and simply replace the emitter according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Tests show that switching a UV lamp off once a month for 1-2 days has no negative effect on the emitter's lifespan. So for trips longer than 1-2 days, feel free to switch the lamp off. Switching it off for just a few hours, though - for example while you're at work - doesn't make sense; it's counterproductive and essentially harmful, while the financial saving is minimal.
Some people are quick to work out potential savings by fitting a timer switch - for example, having the lamp switch on at 6 a.m. and off at 11 p.m. once everyone at home is asleep. We'd advise against this, for the reasons explained above.
The idea of using a flow sensor to switch the UV lamp on only when water is actually being drawn looks, at first glance, like a sensible way to cut energy use. In practice, though, this approach is strongly discouraged for standard UV water sterilizers. Flow sensors are far more harmful, and can even burn out the emitter within a matter of weeks.
A flow sensor is meant to switch the lamp on the moment something like a pressure pump kicks in. Sometimes that pump only runs for, say, 5 or 10 seconds - and the flow sensor then switches the emitter off again.
One example from the warranty service department of the Nordic Tec UV lamp brand: we recently had a case where a timer switch was used to trigger a UV lamp synchronised with a pressure pump. It led to the emitter burning out just 4 weeks after the sterilizer was installed. Instead of savings, the customer ended up needing to buy a new emitter, which costs around €25-40 on the market.
It's also worth remembering that the power draw of a household UV lamp is relatively small - typically somewhere between a dozen or so and a few dozen watts. So the savings from switching the unit off are generally minor, while they may come at the cost of disinfection effectiveness and emitter lifespan. If the emitter needs replacing sooner as a result, you'll pay for that at the till when buying the next one - and also in the time it takes to fit it.
This is one of the most common questions asked by people using UV lamps for water at home. After several hours of operation, the sterilizer's housing - especially the stainless steel chamber - can feel noticeably warm, or even hot to the touch. This, however, is a completely normal effect of the UV emitter's operation. A UV sterilizer heating up is safe, even though it can seem concerning to a lot of people.

Alongside ultraviolet radiation, the emitter also produces a certain amount of heat. When water isn't flowing through the chamber, it can't carry that heat away, which is why the housing's temperature can rise. This doesn't mean the unit is working incorrectly, and it's not a reason to switch it off. Most UV sterilizers are specifically designed for exactly this kind of continuous operation. UV sterilizers are built to cope with water sitting inside them for many hours, even days. Despite the rise in temperature, this won't bring the water to the boil or damage the system.
As long as the unit has been installed according to the manufacturer's instructions, has proper ventilation, and is operating within the permitted conditions, the chamber warming up is nothing to worry about. If anything, switching the lamp off simply because it feels warm can do more harm than good - it shortens the emitter's lifespan and reduces disinfection effectiveness.
