The 21st century has brought new opportunities and challenges to developed countries. For the first time, such a high standard of living has been achieved, but never before has Western civilization faced the problem of a lack of high-quality water. Social development, technological advancements, urbanization - these are desirable phenomena, but unfortunately, our prosperity also leads to environmental pollution, including water pollution, through the generation of enormous amounts of waste, emissions, and contaminants.
For this reason, in some regions of the West, the use of filters or, more precisely, UV sterilizers has become standard.
Is it necessary? We probably have more pressing social problems for now. However, clean water is the basis of a healthy life, and it's worth taking care of in advance. According to research conducted in the USA, the quality of drinking water we use is crucial for maintaining health in the long run.
The frequent term "filtration" is not entirely correct regarding UV; it's more about disinfection or water sterilization. Disinfecting water with UV rays is simply the most effective method - it allows us to avoid
water treatment with chemical agents. The action of ultraviolet lamps does not change
the composition of the water itself, leaving no traces of odor or taste.
The water gains crystalline clarity, bacteria, fungi, and especially algae are killed off. There is no risk of UV overdose during water disinfection. Another advantage is virtually maintenance-free operation (except for periodic bulb replacement, once every 8-10,000 hours of continuous operation, i.e., on average once every 12-14 months). Operating costs are also relatively low because power consumption is minimal (lamps serving single-family households have a power consumption of no more than 50-70W).
So, the answer is simple - UV is the most effective method so far - humanity does not know of better methods of water treatment. As evidence of this, it is worth considering why UV rays are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry.
✅ UV disinfection is used for water treatment in the food industry, including beer and wine production. It is also used for the same purposes in gastronomic facilities, hotels, apartments - obtaining water without impurities, foreign odors, or contaminants.
It is also used in aquaristics, where it allows for obtaining crystal-clear water required by some specimens, without using chemicals.
Another common example of use is in pool technology, where UV rays successfully allow avoiding pool chemicals, including chlorine. Enjoying the pool is much more pleasant when the water is free of the characteristic smell of chlorine. The absence of chlorination also means significant savings, as well as the absence of the need for frequent water replacement. This applies to private pools, as in public swimming pools, the SANEPID requires the use of chlorine, specifying its minimum required concentration. Despite this, UV disinfection is an important complement to the not always effective chemical-chlorine disinfection.

However, to ensure its safety for consumption, treating water from deep wells is often necessary, as they are frequently contaminated with the presence of Escherichia coli bacteria, commonly known as E. coli.
Treating water from deep wells using UV radiation involves exposing the water to UV light, which effectively neutralizes harmful pathogens such as E. coli bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Unlike chemical disinfection methods, UV treatment does not alter the taste, odor, or pH of water. It is a non-invasive process that leaves no traces of chemicals in the water, making it environmentally friendly.
The UV purification process is simple yet highly effective. Water flows through a chamber containing UV lamps. These lamps are radiators that emit ultraviolet UV-C light, which penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms, destroying their DNA and preventing reproduction.
