In the Middle Ages, stoves and fireplaces not only provided heat but also became symbols of the hearth – the place around which family life revolved. However, central heating was not used in homes, which meant that a district heating system could not yet exist.

It was there that the first heating systems were developed, with one of the most groundbreaking inventions being the hypocaustum. This innovative system allowed hot air to flow under floors and through channels in walls, enabling the even distribution of heat in homes and baths. This solution was extremely advanced for its time. The hypocaust allowed for a fundamental concept – the possibility of heating many homes equipped with a hypocaust from a single heat source, such as a boiler or a fire. It was one of the first central heating systems.

The hypocaust or latin hypocaustum, the ancient underfloor heating system, is a true masterpiece of engineering from those times. In Roman homes and baths, hot air flowed under the floor and through channels in the walls, providing even heat. Their increasing availability allowed for connecting more homes without negatively affecting the pressure efficiency of district heating networks. Systems became more efficient, and it became possible to build larger networks with relatively lower public expenditure.
