The Reynolds number is one of the most important concepts in fluid mechanics, often encountered when selecting hydraulic devices based on flow—such as heat exchangers. Although the Reynolds number itself is just a dimensionless number, it allows engineers and designers to determine the nature of fluid flow in a given system—whether it is smooth and orderly or turbulent and chaotic. This, in turn, directly affects the efficiency of devices such as pipes, channels, manifolds, heat exchangers, pump groups, and even components of airplanes, tanks, or turbines. Without the research of the Irish engineer from the University of Manchester in the late 19th century (Osborne Reynolds), many hydraulic devices would certainly not be designed in such a modern and efficient way today. Undoubtedly, today's heat exchangers would not be able to achieve such high efficiency with such compact dimensions.
The Reynolds number (denoted as "Re") describes the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces acting on a fluid. When the Re value is low, viscous forces dominate—the fluid moves smoothly, in layers, without mixing. This type of flow is called laminar. When Re is high, inertial forces dominate, leading to swirls, irregularities, and intense mixing—i.e., turbulent flow.
If we don't have to calculate it ourselves, the matter is quite simple. General thresholds help determine the type of flow:

These values may vary depending on the system's geometry and boundary conditions, but they provide a good baseline for assessment. Interpreting the Reynolds number is relatively straightforward, but it's important to remember that a higher value is not always desirable (as is the case with heat exchangers). It depends on the specific application.
The applications of the Reynolds number are vast—from designing hydraulic installations and individual hydraulic devices to optimizing industrial processes and vehicle aerodynamics. In heating or cooling systems, such as heat exchangers, designers often aim for turbulent flow because it ensures better fluid mixing and thus more efficient heat transfer.
However, there are also cases where the opposite is true—a calmer flow is preferred. For example, in laboratory fluid transport, laminar flow may be preferred—quieter and more stable.
The Reynolds number is not just textbook theory—it is a practical engineering tool that helps understand, control, and improve the performance of many technical systems. It can increase efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize processes across various engineering fields. Therefore, anyone working with liquids, gases, or heat transfer should be well acquainted with it.
