A pressure switch is a device used to control and regulate pressure in various types of installations, systems, and technical setups. Many people have heard of it, but most do not fully associate what it actually is—unless someone has a technical inclination or has encountered such a device before. Its main task is to respond to changes in the pressure of a medium (air, water, oil, or another fluid) and appropriately control the operation of devices such as pumps, compressors, fans, or boilers. Pressure switches are widely used in heating, hydraulic, pneumatic installations, as well as in industrial systems.
The operating principle of a pressure switch is based on comparing the current pressure with a previously set threshold value. When the pressure reaches a defined minimum or maximum level, the pressure switch changes the state of its electrical contacts. This may result in switching a pump, compressor, boiler, or another device on or off—thus regulating the pressure, acting somewhat like a safety device. Thanks to this, the installation operates automatically, without manual intervention, and within a safe pressure range.
It depends—there are various design solutions. A typical pressure switch consists of a pressure-sensitive element such as a diaphragm, piston, or bellows, as well as a spring mechanism and electrical contacts. As the pressure changes, the sensing element moves and causes the contacts to switch. In most pressure switches, it is possible to adjust the switching on and off thresholds, which allows the device to be adapted to specific operating conditions.
One might be surprised how many places they are used, even though they are often simply overlooked. In heating systems, they protect boilers and pumps from operating under unsafe conditions. In water installations, they prevent pumps from running dry, and in compressed air systems, they control the operation of compressors. They are also used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and industrial installations, as well as in many heat pump systems and cooling systems using refrigerants.
One of the most important roles of a pressure switch is to protect devices and the entire system. Too low or too high pressure can lead to failures, mechanical damage, or reduced performance. The pressure switch reacts immediately when permissible values are exceeded, preventing costly breakdowns and increasing operational safety. This is precisely why it is used—like the aforementioned safety device.
Various types of pressure switches are available on the market, including low-pressure and high-pressure switches, as well as mechanical and electronic versions. Mechanical pressure switches are simple and reliable, while electronic ones offer greater precision, the ability to display pressure values, and easier configuration. The choice of the appropriate model depends on the type of installation and the user’s requirements.
