Types of electric boilers for solar PV

There are several types of electric boilers available on the market that can work with photovoltaic installations, tailoring the heating system to individual needs. These include resistance, induction, electrode and storage units. Each has unique properties that affect energy efficiency and thermal comfort in the home. Electric boilers can perform one or two functions. Single-function models are used only for space heating, while dual-function models additionally heat domestic hot water. Thanks to this variety, it is possible to choose the solution that best meets individual requirements in terms of functionality and energy savings. One of the more popular choices is storage heaters, which store heat and release it gradually. This solution makes it possible to use solar energy efficiently even at night or on cloudy days, which makes it a particularly attractive option for solar PV users.

Induction electric boiler – advantages and disadvantages

Induction electric boilers are modern heating devices that use the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction to heat water. They eliminate the need for traditional resistance heating elements, which translates into higher energy efficiency and a longer service life. Their biggest advantage is reliability, which makes them an attractive choice for people looking for dependable solutions. It is worth remembering, however, that induction boilers are more expensive to buy than traditional models. Even so, their high efficiency and durability may mean that the investment pays off over the longer term, especially when combined with a solar PV installation.

Electrode electric boiler – is it worth it?

Electrode electric boilers work on the principle of current flowing through an electrolyte, which allows efficient use of electrical energy. Their main advantage is a lower purchase cost compared to other types of electric boilers, which makes them more accessible to a wide range of users. However, it should be remembered that electrode boilers require regular maintenance due to the risk of corrosion, which can affect their long-term performance. To increase operating efficiency, they are often used in combination with a heat buffer tank, which allows surplus energy from solar PV to be used more effectively.

Storage heater – efficiency and savings

A storage heater enables heat to be stored and released gradually, which makes it an ideal choice for working with photovoltaic installations. Thanks to the use of storage materials, this heater can effectively warm rooms even when solar energy production is limited. Although the initial purchase cost of a storage heater may be higher, its energy efficiency and the ability to use surplus energy from solar PV mean it is an investment that can bring real savings. It is one of the more economical and eco-friendly solutions for heating a home.

How do you match the electric boiler output to a solar PV installation?

Selecting the right electric boiler output for a solar PV installation is crucial for heating efficiency and savings. For the system to operate optimally, you need to take into account both the building’s energy demand and the amount of energy generated by the solar panels. The right parameters make it possible to use free solar energy to the fullest, which translates into lower bills and greater independence from the grid. When determining energy demand, factors such as the building’s floor area, the quality of insulation, and the number of occupants are important. A large house with poor insulation requires a higher-output boiler to heat all rooms effectively. By contrast, a well-insulated building with a smaller floor area can operate efficiently with a lower-output device. Modern electric boilers are characterised by almost 100% energy efficiency, which means that all energy drawn is converted into heat. As a result, they are an excellent complement to a solar PV installation, allowing free solar energy to be used to the fullest and losses minimised.

The impact of house size on boiler selection

The building’s floor area is one of the key factors determining the choice of an appropriate electric boiler. The larger the area, the greater the heat demand, which means the need for a higher-output device. However, the size of the house is not everything – the quality of insulation, the number of occupants, and the layout of rooms are also important. For example, a 150 m² house with modern insulation may require a boiler with an output of 10–12 kW. Meanwhile, a building of the same size but with poorer insulation may need as much as 15–18 kW. That is why it is so important to analyse all parameters carefully to avoid both underestimating and oversizing the heating system.

Electric boiler running costs vs solar PV

Combining an electric boiler with a solar PV installation is an effective way to reduce running costs. Using solar energy allows spending on electricity to be significantly reduced, which is particularly important in the face of rising energy prices. Producing your own energy not only reduces bills, but also increases independence from suppliers. One of the key factors affecting the cost of using an electric boiler is choosing the right energy tariff. A tariff with cheaper off-peak electricity (e.g. Economy 7 in the UK) makes it possible to plan heating strategically, which translates into real savings. This makes it possible to adjust the boiler’s operating schedule to more favourable electricity rates, maximising cost efficiency. The efficiency of the device itself is just as important. The higher the boiler’s efficiency, the less energy is wasted, which directly translates into lower bills. Choosing a high-efficiency model is an investment that pays off quickly. Additional savings can be achieved thanks to modern energy management systems and smart solutions that optimise electricity use. Technologies supporting effective use of solar PV energy, such as energy storage or automatic heating control, allow expenses to be controlled even better and savings increased.

Heat buffer tank and DHW cylinder – are they worth using?

Modern heating systems increasingly use a heat buffer tank and a DHW cylinder to increase energy efficiency and optimise energy consumption. These solutions are particularly beneficial when combined with electric boilers and photovoltaic installations, because they allow surplus energy to be stored and used at the most convenient time. A heat buffer tank acts as a storage vessel, storing heat for later use. This is particularly useful in systems with electric boilers, where surplus energy from photovoltaic panels can be collected and used during periods of higher demand. This means that energy produced during the day can be used effectively in the evening or at night, increasing self-consumption and reducing heating costs. A DHW cylinder is a tank intended for storing domestic hot water. It can work with a dual-function electric boiler, ensuring constant access to hot water. In homes with photovoltaic installations, solar energy can be used to heat water, which further increases the efficiency of the entire system and allows savings. It is worth paying attention to how a dual-function electric boiler works with a DHW cylinder. Such integration enables intelligent energy management, which is particularly important in the context of rising electricity prices and the need for sustainable resource management. Thanks to this, users can enjoy thermal comfort and constant access to hot water, while minimising energy consumption. In homes with solar PV, selecting appropriate solutions for effective heat storage from an electric boiler is crucial. Modern technologies make it possible to further increase the energy efficiency of such systems, which translates into real savings and greater energy independence.

How to store heat from an electric boiler – optimal solutions for homes with solar PV

In homes equipped with photovoltaic installations, heat storage from an electric boiler plays a key role in energy optimisation. Using a heat buffer tank and a DHW cylinder are among the most effective methods of storing surplus energy and using it later. This makes it possible to minimise energy losses and make the most of solar panel generation, which directly translates into savings and greater efficiency of the entire system.

Electric boiler or heat pump – which works better with solar PV?

The choice between an electric boiler and a heat pump in the context of working with a photovoltaic installation depends on several key factors. These include initial costs, energy efficiency and long-term cost-effectiveness. Each of these solutions has its advantages, but also limitations that affect user comfort and the level of energy bills. An electric boiler is a solution that appeals because of a lower purchase price and ease of installation. It is particularly attractive for people who want to minimise initial expenditure. However, its operation involves high electricity consumption, which over the longer term can lead to significant costs. In modern installations, it is also worth using a plate heat exchanger for an electric boiler, which improves heat transfer efficiency. A heat pump works differently – it draws energy from the environment (air, water or ground) and uses it to heat the building and domestic hot water. It is much more energy-efficient than an electric boiler, which translates into lower running costs. Although its purchase and installation require a larger investment, over a longer period it can deliver substantial savings, especially when powered by photovoltaic energy. Combining a heat pump with a photovoltaic installation makes it possible to use free solar energy to the fullest. As a result, heating costs can be significantly reduced and a household’s energy independence increased. In addition, such a solution is environmentally friendly – it reduces CO₂ emissions and lowers the carbon footprint. If the priority is a low initial cost, an electric boiler may seem like a sensible choice. However, over the longer term, in terms of savings and energy efficiency, a heat pump proves to be the more future-proof solution. A bigger investment at the start can mean lower bills and greater independence in the future.

Does energy storage increase the efficiency of electric heating?

Modern heating systems increasingly use energy storage, which can significantly improve the efficiency of electric heating. Thanks to this, surplus energy from a photovoltaic installation is not wasted, but stored and used when heat demand is higher. This is particularly important during periods when solar energy production falls and heating needs rise. Although purchasing energy storage involves additional costs, it can bring measurable benefits. In the face of rising electricity prices and the pursuit of greater energy independence, this solution allows energy consumption to be better controlled. What is more, energy storage not only reduces heating bills, but also provides stable electricity supply, which translates into greater thermal comfort – especially in the evening and at night. Cooperation between energy storage and solar PV plays a key role in optimising energy consumption. During the day, the storage system collects surplus electrical energy, and after dark it powers the heating system, e.g. an electric boiler. This increases self-consumption of energy, which leads to lower electricity bills and more efficient use of renewable energy sources. It is also worth considering investing in additional batteries, especially if you have a photovoltaic installation. Energy storage stores energy in batteries that can be used at any time. Additional modules increase energy independence and can bring long-term savings, which is particularly important in the face of dynamic changes in the energy market.

How does energy storage work and is it worth investing in additional batteries?

In the face of rising energy costs and the need for better resource management, energy storage systems are becoming increasingly popular. Their ability to store surplus energy from solar PV and use it when demand is higher makes them an attractive solution for many households. Investing in energy storage can significantly improve the efficiency of the heating system and bring real savings. This is particularly beneficial for people who want to make the most of the potential of renewable energy sources and become independent of fluctuations in electricity prices. Over the longer term, such a solution provides greater energy stability and allows energy spending to be controlled more effectively.
