Heat Exchanger Ba-60-20 for 20 plate Heat Pump

Plate heat exchanger with long plates and relatively large connections, i.e. 5/4". Thanks to its low hydraulic pressure losses, it is ideal for connecting heat pumps to heating systems, but it can also be used with traditional boilers, such as coal- or wood-fired ones. Due to its large connections and relatively low pressure losses, the Ba-60-20 plate heat exchanger also performs well in many older central heating systems operating in gravitational mode (without the use of circulation pumps in the open circuit).

As you can see in the graph above, the Ba-60-20 heat exchanger is the smallest of the Ba-60 series. If your application requires an active heat exchange area of more than 1.20 square meters - choose a PHE with more plates to achieve a correspondingly larger total area. Remember that the heat transfer area is a crucial factor to define the heat exchanger's real capacity and compare with other units.

The Ba-60-20 model (as well as the Ba-60-30, 40, 50, and 60-plate models) is a plate heat exchanger with 5/4" connections.

The Nordic Tec Ba-60-20 heat exchanger - what systems is it used for in practice?

This plate heat exchanger is often chosen for cooling applications due to its relatively large external surface area in relation to the plate surface area, making it well-suited for this purpose. However, this does not mean that it is solely a cooling heat exchanger; it also performs well in heating applications. Nordic heat exchangers are generally designed to be versatile and work effectively in both applications. The Ba-60-20 heat exchanger is a 20-plate model with a 1 1/4" connection. It can easily handle a boiler with a heating capacity of up to 40-50 kW or heat a large residential property with an area of up to 400-500 m².

20-plate heat exchanger - how is it built and what are the advantages of this PHE?

Like the entire Nordic Tec Ba-60 series, this 20-plate heat exchanger is based on a large, expansive steel plate that is 0.4mm thick and has a surface area of 0.060m² per individual plate. For this reason, it can be used not only in residential buildings but also in large commercial properties. An additional advantage is its high flow rate, which is enormous when compared to other models with similar power. The nominal flow rate of the plate construction is calculated to be <22,000 l/h.

There are open systems, generally older types with an open expansion tank, that operate by gravity. When connecting more modern heating devices to these systems, such as a gas boiler that operates in closed circuits, it is necessary to use a heat exchanger to separate them. Other newer devices may also be used, such as pellet boilers or heat pumps, which need to be protected from the effects of an open system that is not perfectly clean and is more prone to limescale buildup.

A frequently asked question is how a heat exchanger will perform in a gravity system without a pump (obviously referring to the open-system side). Often, by choosing a heat exchanger with sufficiently low hydraulic resistance, it is possible to maintain gravity operation, and it is not necessary to install a circulation pump - at least on that side. This clearly provides added value and additional savings: the absence of a pump means lower electricity consumption over the years.

However, it is important to remember that such a system should be properly prepared before making this decision—that is, cleaned—and the heat exchanger should be protected with appropriate filters or even a magnetic separator (if necessary).

It should also be emphasized that there is never any guarantee that the system will function properly without a pump. Often it is possible, but there are also cases where, after installing the heat exchanger, gravity operation has not been optimal. It is certainly necessary to choose heat exchangers with the lowest possible pressure losses and relatively large connections. The Ba-60-20 heat exchanger seems to meet these requirements.
