How smog forms – causes and ways to reduce it

Smog is a phenomenon that poses a serious threat to the environment and health. It forms when fog combines with air pollutants, mainly originating from human activity. It most often occurs on windless days, when the lack of air circulation causes harmful substances to accumulate in the atmosphere. Understanding the process of smog formation is crucial, as its effects can be dangerous for both people and nature. In many cities around the world, including also in the UK (especially in cities), smog contributes to the development of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and the gradual degradation of ecosystems. If you are looking to reduce emissions linked to home heating upgrades, it may be worth considering cleaner systems supported by efficient components such as heat pump plate heat exchangers.

What is smog and what types are there?

Smog is a dangerous form of air pollution that negatively affects both human health and the natural environment. There are two main types of smog: London smog and photochemical smog. Each forms under different atmospheric conditions and has a different chemical composition. London smog, also known as acid smog, appears mainly in winter when temperatures are low. It contains high concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. Its main cause is the burning of fossil fuels, which leads to the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere. In the UK, the term “air pollution” is used more often, but the term “London smog” functions historically. It is particularly dangerous in cities with high pollution and poor air circulation, where it can persist for longer periods, causing serious health problems. Photochemical smog forms as a result of chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds under the influence of sunlight. As a result, tropospheric ozone is formed – a substance harmful to both people and plants. This type of smog occurs mainly in summer, especially in large urban agglomerations, where heavy road traffic and high temperatures favour its formation. The differences between types of smog show how important it is to understand the mechanisms behind their formation. Reducing pollutant emissions and improving air quality are key challenges in tackling growing environmental problems.

Main causes of smog formation

Smog is a complex phenomenon whose main sources can be divided into several key categories. One of the most serious factors is low-level emissions, i.e. pollution from domestic boilers, fireplaces, and solid-fuel appliances. In the UK, some households still use fireplaces and solid-fuel appliances (e.g. wood), often in older installations without modern emission-reduction solutions. As a result, harmful substances are released into the atmosphere, worsening air quality. A significant source of smog is also road transport. Older combustion-engine vehicles, especially those without modern filtration systems, emit nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. In large cities, where traffic is intense, these pollutants can accumulate, forming a dense layer of smog – particularly on windless days. The impact of industry cannot be overlooked either, especially chemical plants and broadly understood power generation. Factories and power stations emit, among other things, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, and heavy metals. These substances not only contribute to smog formation, but also negatively affect human health and the state of the environment. In regions with a high concentration of industrial plants, this problem is particularly acute. Finally, it is worth mentioning burning waste in domestic boilers. Although this is an illegal practice, it can happen. Burning plastic, rubber, or varnished wood leads to the emission of toxic substances such as dioxins and heavy metals, which further worsen air quality.

Air pollutants that cause smog

One of the main components of smog is particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5. These microscopic particles can penetrate the lungs and the bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Their sources include car exhaust, industry, and heating homes with solid fuels. Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) is another dangerous component of smog, formed mainly as a result of burning fossil fuels. It contributes to the formation of acid rain, which damages vegetation, acidifies soils, and pollutes water bodies. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are a group of gases emitted mainly by transport and industry. In addition to their role in smog formation, they contribute to acid rain and may negatively affect the human respiratory system. Of particular note is benzo(a)pyrene – a carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Its main source is the burning of wood, solid fuels, and waste. High concentrations of this substance in the air pose a serious health risk, especially during the heating season.

What are the effects of smog on health and the environment?

Smog is not only an aesthetic issue, but above all a serious threat to health and ecosystems. It has a destructive effect on the respiratory system, increasing the risk of diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Long-term exposure to polluted air can also lead to heart disease and strokes, making smog one of the most serious threats to public health. The most vulnerable are children, older people, and individuals with chronic illnesses. In the youngest, whose respiratory system is still developing, smog can cause permanent lung damage and increase susceptibility to infections. Older people and patients with cardiovascular problems more often experience a worsening of their conditions, leading to more hospitalisations and health complications. It is not only people who feel the effects of smog. Air pollution weakens plants, limiting their ability to photosynthesise and grow. Smog also contributes to acidification of soil and waters, which negatively affects aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Animals, like humans, can suffer from respiratory diseases and other conditions resulting from long-term contact with toxic air, which affects their populations and biodiversity. Particulate matter and nitrogen oxides can cause inflammation of the airways, reduce lung capacity, and increase susceptibility to infections. As for the cardiovascular system, smog can lead to increased blood pressure, heart rhythm disturbances, and a higher risk of heart attacks. In cities with high pollution levels, these risks are particularly severe. The negative effects of smog on plants and animals are equally serious. Plants exposed to pollution over the long term may have stunted growth, produce fewer fruits and seeds, and be more susceptible to disease. Animals, especially those living in cities, often suffer from conditions similar to those observed in humans, which affects their ability to survive and reproduce. In the face of such serious consequences, it is worth considering actions that can reduce the impact of smog on health and the environment. Effective protection strategies against this invisible threat can help reduce its negative effects before they become even more severe.

How can smog emissions be reduced?

Effective action against smog requires comprehensive measures and well-planned strategies. One of the key solutions is thermal modernisation of buildings, including insulating walls, replacing windows, and improving energy efficiency. This reduces the demand for heating, which directly lowers pollutant emissions. The result is not only better air quality, but also lower heating bills – benefits for both the environment and the household budget. An alternative to traditional heating systems is heat pumps, which use renewable energy. Because they do not burn solid fuels, they significantly reduce smog emissions. They work well both in new buildings and those undergoing modernisation, which makes them a universal solution in combating air pollution. For installations with a heat pump, it is worth considering the use of a plate heat exchanger for heat pumps, which improves the efficiency of the heating system and supports energy savings.

The role of public transport should not be overlooked either. Reducing the number of cars on the roads leads to lower exhaust emissions, which directly improves air quality. In cities with well-developed public transport, residents are more willing to choose eco-friendly means of travel, such as electric buses, trams, or the Underground. An effective solution is also low-emission zones, which restrict the movement of combustion-engine vehicles in selected parts of cities. Such measures not only reduce smog, but also improve residents’ quality of life – less noise, greater road safety, and cleaner air. Government and local schemes and regulations relating to air quality and heating modernisation are also important support – it is worth checking the details for your region (local council). Modern technologies, intelligent energy management systems, and innovative strategies can further support efforts against smog. It is worth following solutions that help improve air quality and create a healthier environment.

Modes of transport and air quality

Public transport plays a key role in reducing smog, providing an effective alternative to private cars. Using buses, trams, or the Underground reduces the number of combustion-engine vehicles on the roads, which directly translates into lower pollutant emissions. In cities where public transport is well developed, residents are more willing to choose modes of transport with a lower environmental impact, which has a positive effect on air quality. Introducing low-emission zones is another step towards cleaner air. Restricting the movement of combustion-engine vehicles in selected city areas results in reduced pollutant emissions, while also improving residents’ comfort – less noise, greater safety, and cleaner air. The development of electric transport, intelligent traffic management systems, and modern technologies can further support improved air quality. It is worth investing in innovative solutions that contribute to reducing smog and creating a healthier environment.

How can you protect yourself from smog day to day?

In the face of growing air pollution, it is worth taking care of effective protection against smog. There are several proven methods that help limit its negative impact on health. One of the most effective solutions is using air purifiers in homes and offices. These devices remove harmful particles such as particulate matter and allergens, significantly improving indoor air quality. Modern models equipped with HEPA filters capture even microscopic pollutants. This is particularly important for allergy sufferers and people with respiratory conditions. In cities with high smog levels, using them becomes especially important – particularly during the heating season, when air quality deteriorates rapidly. Anti-smog masks are another important protective measure. Models with HEPA filters effectively block particulate matter and other harmful substances, protecting the airways. They are useful during walks or daily commutes on days with high pollution concentrations. When choosing a mask, it is worth paying attention to its filtration class and fit to the face to ensure maximum protection. Regular use of air purifiers and anti-smog masks can increase comfort of living in a polluted environment. This is an investment that has a real impact on health – especially for children, older people, and those with breathing problems. Taking conscious action helps you breathe cleaner air every day.
